About the Montara Beach Coalition
The sole purpose of this web-site is to inform, inspire and educate, using a respect for nature and the environment as a touchstone. The site is run by Montara residents who have a passion for the beautiful place they live. Our purpose is driven by a love for the beautiful beaches, parks and countryside that are in and surround Montara.

Although this site is dedicated mainly to Montara State Beach we also include McNee Ranch, Gray Whale Cove, Montara Lighthouse and all the surrounding land and coast that makes up the Montara District. We hope this site will help everyone enjoy the vast array of natural treasures that Montara has and inspire people to act to help preserve and protect the land, sea and wildlife not only of Montara, but throughout the stunning treasure that is the California Coastal region.

We hope that if you visit this site and enjoy the content it will encourage you to become involved in a project or organization that will make a difference to the California Coast, be it getting involved in local action via this site or some other organization. Please contact us with

The Sad Facts:

  1. The average American generates at least six pounds of trash every day.

  2. Annually, approximately 14 billion pounds of trash is discarded on beaches, in rivers, or in coastal waters and ends up as marine debris.

  3. Plastic bags and other plastic garbage that is thrown into the ocean kills nearly 1 million sea creatures every year.

  4. Plastic trash comprises 60 to 80% of all litter. It has an incredibly long life. A plastic six-pack cover is expected to last 450 years.

  5. Almost 90% of floating marine debris is plastic. There are over 46,000 pieces of plastic debris floating on every square mile of ocean today.
